OVO Energy Women’s Cycle Tour huge success once again
Katarzyna Niewiadoma has claimed the overall victory in the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, which returned to Chesterfield on Saturday 10 June for both the start and finish of the fourth stage of the pelotan,
Last year, the town hosted only the finish of stage 3 in The OVO Energy Women’s Tour. This year, Chesterfield hosted the start and finish of the penultimate stage of the five stage Tour.
The UK’s premier event for women cyclists began in Chesterfield winding its way through the beautiful Peak District National Park before returning for a sprint finish on the cobbles of Chesterfield’s traditional market place.
Riders set off on the 123km route from Chesterfield Town Hall on Rose Hill, cycling a 123km loop which included Middleton Top, Belper, Crich and Staveley before finishing in Chesterfield town centre, highlighting Chesterfield’s proximity to both the Peak District and rich countryside.
The OVO Energy Women’s Tour attracts the very best athletes and teams every year to race on British roads in front of hundreds of thousands of fans. 17 teams competed in this year’s 2017 OVO Energy Women’s Tour with all of the world’s top 15 teams competing alongside British domestic teams WNT Pro Cycling and Drops.
The Chesterfield and Derbyshire route was one of the most challenging stages of the race, as the cyclists had to face the steep hills and descents associated with the beautiful and scenic Derbyshire landscape. The stage 4 win went to Orica Scott’s Sarah Roy.
It wasn’t all just about the pro cyclists though, on the day Chesterfield was also a hive of cycling related activities for children and families to enjoy.
Peter Swallow, Managing Director of Bolsterstone Plc, the company behind Chesterfield Waterside commented: “The OVO Energy Women’s Tour was a wonderful and prestigious event for Chesterfield to host once again. Having international events like this in Chesterfield not only brings visitors to the town, but also showcases what a central and easily accessible location Chesterfield is to both transport links and the Peak District National Park. Chatsworth House is literally only minutes away from Chesterfield Waterside.”
