Planning permission granted for canal restoration works

The canal restoration works can now move forward after planning permission was granted. This will facilitate the connection of the canal basin, constructed in 2009, with the Chesterfield Canal.

The canal basin is central to the £75 million Basin Square neighbourhood of the Chesterfield Waterside development and will provide a focal point for the workers and residents who will occupy the offices and apartments there.

The reconnection of the canal basin to the Chesterfield Canal will play a role in bringing tourism to the town. Future plans include working closely with Chesterfield Borough Council to deliver community festivals centred around the canal basin.

A new public realm will also be created within Basin Square which will also be home to the world famous Dame Barbara Hepworth sculpture.

Chesterfield Waterside is recognised as being one of the UK’s largest regeneration projects and is being developed by Chesterfield-based Bolsterstone Plc, working in conjunction with Arnold Laver Group and Chesterfield Borough Council.

Phase one of the Basin Square site will comprise: build to rent apartments, a multi-storey car park (442 spaces), offices and an 84-bed hotel. It is likely to create more than 300 new jobs and will create a brand new landmark for the town, as well as a sense of arrival for visitors arriving into the nearby mainline train station.
