Employers in the area benefit from over 55,000 undergraduates and postgraduate students attending the universities of Sheffield - over 18,000 students graduated from these institutions in 2010 with a first degree or other Higher Education qualification.

Sheffield itself is ranked fourth in the world for engineering and has cemented that reputation with the announcement of Factory 2050, the £43million centre of excellence for advanced manufacturing at Sheffield Business Park. The state-of-the-art development will be built by the University of Sheffield, consolidating the success of their investment in the original Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre on the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Catcliff.
